No, it has never been proven that ginger enhances sexual desire. But it does have other health benefits. If you’re looking for an aphrodisiac, you’d be better off trying ginseng, which is effective against erectile dysfunction and difficulty reaching orgasm.
Ginger is widely used in Indian and Asian cooking. It contains gingerol – the compound that gives it its distinctive odor. Gingerol is also known to improve the health of sperm, but it doesn’t necessarily affect libido.
The myth about ginger’s carnal powers probably comes from its ability to stimulate blood circulation. But even if it isn’t an aphrodisiac, ginger does contain compounds with scientifically-proven benefits. For instance, ginger’s compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can help with digestive disorders (according to studies carried out on animals), nausea and arthritis.
In terms of aphrodisiacs, ginseng is lesser known but may just fit the bill. Its ginsenosides have shown to improve erectile function. Ginseng is also thought to boost libido, but primarily among men.
